BI Publisher & Connected Query: Live Demos on How to Build Reports

AM Workshop: Session #5371

Presenter: Christopher Pokorny, Cleveland State University

Track: Technical & Reporting

Related Technology: PeopleSoft/Oracle On-Prem

Details:

Connected Query and BI Publisher in PeopleSoft are powerful technologies for generating reports, but they can come off as intimidating at times to users. Once you dive into them a little bit, though, the light bulb clicks and it becomes fairly easy! In this workshop, we'll explain the purpose of each technology, and then go through live demonstrations on how to relate child queries to their parent query in Connected Query, design report templates in Microsoft Word, and run BI Publisher reports. Whether you are a beginner or intermediate user, functional or technical, this workshop is structured to allow everyone to grasp the complex material in no time. Attendees who bring a laptop will have time to practice working with the BI Publisher Toolbar in Microsoft Word in real-time. These are the topics that will be covered: (1) Showing a very basic BI Publisher report so the audience sees right away what type of tool we’ll be working with for the report being developed (2) The concept of parent/child queries (3) Relating these queries to each other in Connected Query (4) Using the XML output from the Connected Query as sample data when designing the report template (5) Designing the report template in Microsoft Word, including inserting individual fields, handling fields with multiple rows, and formatting the template (6) How to use basic programming code in BI Publisher for things like storing variables, performing calculations on variables, and using if-then-else logic (7) Defining and running the BI Publisher report in PeopleSoft (8) Additional tips and tricks that tie all of the loose ends together.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the purpose and functionality of Connected Query and BI Publisher.
  • Learn to create and relate parent and child queries within Connected Query.
  • Design and format BI Publisher report templates in Microsoft Word.
  • Gain hands-on experience running and refining BI Publisher reports in PeopleSoft.

Beyond Go-Live: Organizing Workday for Adoption That Lasts

PM Workshop: Session #6076

Presenter: Kristina Kelpe, Legato Strategic Consulting

Track: Student Information System (SIS)

Related Technology: Workday

Details:

Workday is powerful, but without intentional design it becomes cluttered, confusing, and underused. More training for staff, faculty, and students is not the answer. Teaching people to navigate a poorly organized system only hides the problem. The real solution is design. Vendors focus on getting systems live, not on user experience, yet Workday already provides the tools (at no additional cost) to create an intuitive interface aligned to your institution’s operations. With intentional design, reports are findable, dashboards clear, and processes seamless. Institutions who invest in design turn Workday into an even stronger asset. Note: If we did a workshop format, we could have people do some hands-on exercises in building configuration in their Workday test tenant. That would change some of the items listed below where users would need to have some knowledge at an intermediate level of Workday and have a tenant they can practice in.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the impact of intentional design on Workday usability.
  • Identify built-in Workday tools and configuration options.
  • Learn strategies for designing clear dashboards, discoverable reports, and seamless processes.
  • Apply design principles hands-on within a Workday test tenant.

Equation Engine: The Power and the Glory!

 PM Workshop: Session #5787

Presenter: Vic Goldberg - University of Colorado

Track: Student Information System (SIS)

Related Technology: PeopleSoft/Oracle On-Prem

Details:

Are you an experienced equation engine user who wants to find out how to take your skills to the next level? Have you heard others talk about using Equation Engine to fix data in the system? Are you unable to develop the Financial Aid budgets that your school wants to use because the data you need isn’t available in the Budget process? Well, then this is the workshop for you! During this workshop (make sure you have access to work with Equation Engine in a test system on your laptop!), we will write and test equations for doing FA Budget calculations, and update data in the system using SQL. We will talk about best practices for ensuring the safety of your data, and how to thoroughly test your equations. We will also talk about some of the sneaky ways to learn what your equations are doing during actual executions using debug messages without having to run jobs in batch! Vic Goldberg, the instructor, has close to 20 years experience with Equation Engine, as well as experience as a software engineer and database administrator, so he is aware of all the ins and outs of using Equation Engine. This workshop is NOT for beginners – you will be expected to be familiar with editing and creating equations, including at least some experience using Equation SQL. You also should have a good understanding of business practices for your module; the techniques will be learning require that you truly understand the data and business practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Enhance advanced Equation Engine skills by writing and testing equations for Financial Aid (FA) budget calculations.
  • Apply best practices for data integrity and system safety when creating and executing equations that modify institutional data.
  • Develop effective debugging and testing techniques to monitor and analyze equation behavior.
  • Deepen understanding of the interaction between business processes and data structures.
