Description:

An overview of a unique, but powerful use case of Oracle Cloud EPM for Enrolment Planning. The presentation will provide finance and IT users to help rethink how Oracle EPM can be utilized to support revenue contribution and decrease expenses for their own institutions.

A Canadian Higher Education institution has worked with Deloitte for the past few years, first utilizing Hyperion Planning, and now Oracle Cloud EPM Planning to manage their budgeting and forecasting processes. Specifically, our presentation is going to focus on how this has contributed to the improvements of the Enrolment Planning process, ultimately leading to a:
Consolidated view of contribution margins across all programs and campuses for a 5-year plan
Proactively planning for constraints and optimizing subsequent investments
Improved planning for the launch of a new revenue streams, ie new academic programs
As with many planning processes, previously the process was Excel-based and involved manual data collection and consolidation to simulate what-if modeling scenarios.

Business use-cases of these models are threefold:
During the enrolment planning meetings, financial planners would be able to model enrolment impacts and take critical decisions in real-time
Ahead of enrolment planning meetings, academic officers and planners would have access to a sandbox version to model contribution margins based on primary drivers;
Identify and address logistic and workforce constraints that would be a bottleneck for growth or meeting plan.

As a result of enabling a 5-year contribution outlook for all programs by campus, the customer was able to identify which programs were negative in contribution in the outer years. They then determined the optimal mix of students to make such programs contribution positive, and then focused on performing the marketing and promotion of such programs for international students.
Due to uptake in enrolment on smaller campuses and new programs being offered, the application helped the customer determine that there will be a shortage in classrooms and labs in coming years on those campuses. Hence, the customer was able to proactively plan for investments in facilities to meet the increase in enrolment demand.
As a result of the consolidated planning view provided by the application, the institution was able to ascertain a significant margin of confidence as to when a new program would lead to a positive contribution based on the optimal mix (domestic, international) of students and interest expressed in the offering.

As a result of the evident benefits this can bring to many of our customers in Higher Education, Deloitte has since developed a custom asset within Oracle EPM Cloud to support a proven, efficient & reduced-risk implementation of the Enrolment planning capabilities.
