A National Framework for Enhancing Academics as University Teachers

The Higher Education and Training department of South Africa released a framework to consolidate and build on activities and resources that are currently dispersed, provide a stable, long-term base for national initiatives, raise the status of university teachers and teaching and identify where targeted funding and interventions are needed. The imperatives for action for the framework: To enable continuous professional development (CPD) for university teachers. Establish and maintain university teacher development structures, organisations and resources. Ensure that academics are recognised and rewarded for the work that they do as university teachers. Advance university teaching through leadership development. Promote knowledge production and knowledge sharing about university teaching. Develop expectation of academics in their roles as university teachers. Allow academics to visually see the expected courses for professional development as identified by the University of Pretoria and guide them through the process to apply and complete all relevant courses through workflow.  Fluid pages to search for other relevant courses and resources stored in a central repository is available.  Questionnaire framework implemented to statistically evaluate each course attended by Academics to evaluate offerings. Mentorship application through workflow and the creation of appointment letters confirming appointment as a mentor.  The tracking of the 2 year mentorship process with integration to Performance management. Application of an academic to be peer reviewed with an online Peer Review evaluation form which is submitted to the Academic and the Head of the Department for review and suggestions for further development. All this is consolidated within the Academic CV which is used for probation confirmation and promotions. Dashboard reporting to all faculty structures on each academic’s development progress and mentorship reviews.  Education Innovation responsible for creating and leading an organisational culture of teaching excellence, have access to Dashboards to review CPD content and resources.  Dashboards enhance visibility of Academic development and progress to all faculty and executive structures.

Dr Sanet Haupt is the Head of the Education Consultants in the Department for Education Innovation and is experienced in the area of academic professional development. She is a certified Learning Strategist. Following a diverse career in the private and public sector, her IT and managerial education, has shaped her current strengths and perspectives.
She is the author and co-author of various articles in the field of Higher Education and has presented on related topics nationally and internationally.
